In 1992, the Guardian newspaper, in conjunction with John Michell's Cerealogist magazine and Morphic Resonance theorist Dr Rupert Sheldrake, sponsored an all-in crop circle making competition - intended to help assess the capabilities of 'hoaxers', compared to the 'true' circlemakers. Here, second place winner Jim Schnabel (right), having single-handedly completed the required pictogram, explains the finer points of his flattening technique to Dr Sheldrake.
